Please note that due the Covid-19 situation, we have postponed the conference. The new conference date is 6–7 May 2022.
The Finnish International Studies Association (FISA) organises its seventh triannual FISA Conference in cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, the Ministry of Defence of Finland, and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA). The conference provides a comprehensive, timely, and multidisciplinary overview of the state of International Relations research, bringing together researchers and actors within the field of international politics. The conference will be held at the Scandic Rosendahl in Tampere with the possibility of attending online.
The theme of the 2022 FISA Conference is Multilateralism and its Ruptures.
In recent years, there has been a wave of analysis suggesting that the era of multilateralism is over as international organisations have been declining in power, states engage in bilateral negotiations instead of multilateral cooperation, and authoritarian governance has been on the rise. In the 2020s, the future of multilateral cooperation seems once again more promising with the presidency of Joe Biden in the United States, China’s turn towards more ambitious climate targets, the post-Brexit horizon in the European Union, and the increased international networks formed in response to the Covid-19 crisis. At the same time, many developments in international politics suggest that there is no return to the era of strong multilateral cooperation. At the 2022 FISA Conference, we will examine the current and future state of multilateralism from different analytical perspectives. The conference theme will be discussed in keynote presentations, panels, and workshops.
The first confirmed keynote speaker is Professor Anu Bradford who is Henry L. Moses Professor of Law and International Organization at Columbia University. Bradford coined the term the Brussels Effect to describe the European Union’s major influence on global markets. She is the author of The Brussels Effect: How the European Union Rules the World (Oxford University Press 2020). Before joining Columbia University, Bradford was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Law School.
PAPER PROPOSALS
FISA invites papers and panels for workshop sessions. They can deal with various aspects of International Relations including both theoretical or empirical contributions. The papers do not need to be directly related to the overall theme of the conference but it is recommended. The call for papers was open until 1 August 2021.
